When Liam Neeson tells the kidnappers "I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.", I turn up the volume, grab a throw, and wait for the butt kicking that's about to go down on my new-ish TV.
I've been pretty happy with this TV. It's clear, the speakers are good, and it's the perfect size for watching movies like Taken or one of my favorite Philadelphia sports teams. What more could a girl ask for?
Well....it turns out a girl can ask for an LED backlight!
Backlights are one of the first things I notice in pictures of home theatres. Their colorful glow, peeking out from behind the screen, always looks so inviting. But I assumed the setup was complicated, so I never looked into it. That's until my sister installed her backlight and said it was really easy to do.
Placing the order
I decided to purchase the same brand she did. The Govee RGBIC LED TV Backlight. The company had plenty of YouTube and Amazon reviews, and the majority were positive. Initially I picked the wrong size for my TV. Be sure to double check the size before you submit your order.
Unboxing the lights
After unboxing the backlight, I quickly read through the instructions and made sure I had all the parts. The box contained a power cord, the lights, and clips to hold everything in place.
Doing the install
The install was simple. Here are the high-level steps along with a few tips.
Pull out the TV so you can easily get behind it and clean off the back.
Attach the power pack to the light strip, plug it in, and confirm it works. Then unplug it.
Attach the power pack to the back of the TV.
Tip: I put mine on the bottom right because that side is closest to the electrical outlet.
Slowly remove the plastic covering over the light strip's adhesive and press it down along the back edge of the TV.
Tip: There was a small portion which did not stick well. When I looked closely, this happened because the plastic was still stuck on the adhesive. Once it was removed, that part stuck without any issues.
Add the clips to hold the light strip in place.
Plug the power pack in.
Tip: My TV is on a narrow swivel stand with no storage, so I carefully arranged both the TV and backlight power cords to prevent them from being visible. You may need to use a twist tie to loosely hold the cord(s) in place.
Use the Bluetooth Govee app to control your lighting.
Tip: There are preprogrammed and custom options available, but I prefer the out of the box default. I ended up doing a hard reset to return to it.
Drumroll, please...
And here's the final result, with and without the backlight. Talk about a glow up!! I've turned my basement into a mini theatre, and I absolutely LOVE it.
